New Delhi: It seems the hacker group ‘Anonymous’ warning to Tesla CEO and SpaceX boss Elon Musk over his tweets about cryptocurrencies didn’t deter him from commenting on the world’s largest currency bitcoin.

Tesla CEO once again tweeted on Sunday saying the electric carmaker will resume allowing bitcoin transactions when miners who verify transactions use more renewable energy. Musk changed his stance about accepting Bitcoin as a payment for its cars which he had earlier claimed on several occasions. In May, the leader in a Tweet said the Bitcoin mining wasn’t ‘clean’ and he didn’t want his decision to come at an environmental cost.

Now, the business tycoon has once again issued a statement with a slight change saying that the company will resume Bitcoin transactions only if there is confirmation of reasonable clean energy usage by miners.

“When there’s confirmation of reasonable clean energy usage by miners with the positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing Bitcoin transactions,” he said in a tweet. He added, “Tesla only sold ~10% of holdings to confirm BTC could be liquidated easily without moving market.”

Earlier in May, Musk also informed about the discussion with North American miners apparently, had the solution to the very problem he had mentioned in his reason for Tesla to drop accepting Bitcoin as a payment method, saying that, “They committed to publish current & planned renewable usage & to ask miners WW to do so. Potentially promising.”

In February, the company said it had purchased $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and planned to accept it as payment. Tesla’s website also had a support page dedicated to Bitcoin, stating that Bitcoin was the only cryptocurrency that Tesla accepts in the continental U.S.

However, these changes in statements over a period of time have hugely impacted the cryptocurrency movement globally so much so that the Internet sleuths have more than just co-related the phenomenon, they’ve even christened it: “The Musk Effect.”

On Musk’s comment on mining cleaner bitcoins, the cryptocurrency’s price surged over $39,000 level on Monday.

As per CoinDesk, Bitcoin climbed over 10 per cent in the last 24 hours to trade $39,794.57, adding $3,404 to its previous close. Ether, the coin linked to the ethereum blockchain network, also rose around 5 per cent to trade near $2,500 level while Dogecoin was trading at $0.32. Other digital coins like XRP, Litecoin also rose over 5 per cent in the last 24 hours.

 

 

New Delhi: The volatility in crypto markets continues to persist as Bitcoin price once again breached $36,000 on Thursday morning after hitting a record low in the last three weeks. The bitcoin has hit a three-week low at $31,025 on Tuesday on the back of institutional investor warning and regulatory attention led to selling.

What’s the reason behind this surge in bitcoin price?

The world’s largest cryptocurrency was trading at $37,182.49 at 0720 hours IST on June 10. The surge came amid the historic adaptation of Bitcoin as a legal tender by El Salvador. It became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as a legal currency. The Latin American nation will mine the cryptocurrency using geothermal energy from its volcanoes.

Around 62 out of 84 votes, a majority of lawmakers voted in favour of the initiative to approve the cryptocurrency as a legal tender. Bitcoin was up around 30.8 per cent from the year’s low of $27,734 on January 4.

El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele said on Twitter on Wednesday that he has instructed state-owned geothermal electric firm LaGeo to come up with a plan to offer bitcoin mining facilities using renewable energy from the country’s volcanoes. “This is going to evolve fast!,” he added.

In another tweet on Thursday, Bukele said that the country’s engineers have dug a new well that will provide around 95 MW of 100 per cent clean and zero emissions geothermal energy from the volcano. “

El Salvador remained among the few countries globally, which didn’t have its own fiat currency and used the US dollar which still be a legal tender in the country.

The move to legalise bitcoin will be closely watched, and it will be interesting to see what happens once this shift takes place.

Othe cryptocurrencies including Ether, Binance, Dogecoin, Cardano, XRP also witnessed a surge on Thursday.  Ether, the coin connected to the Ethereum blockchain network, also climbed on Thursday. The second most popular cryptocurrency was trading 5.27 per cent higher higher at $2,566.40 on Thursday morning.

While Dogecoin, which was created as a parody cryptocurrency, increased 7.59 per cent, Binance Coin also rose nearly 10 per cent.

Bitcoin fell more than 7% on Friday, with tweets by Tesla boss Elon Musk that appeared to lament a breakup with the cryptocurrency again moving markets.

Tesla`s big position in bitcoin and Musk`s large personal following set crypto markets on edge whenever he tweets, and the price fell after he posted “#Bitcoin” https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1400620080090730501, a broken-heart emoji and a picture of a couple discussing a breakup.

Musk followed up by posting a breakup comic strip and replying “nice” to an illustration of rival crypto dogecoin posted by crypto exchange Coinbase. It was unclear what, if anything, any of the tweets meant.

Musk has previously said Tesla would not sell its bitcoin, but his tweets were enough to unsettle markets still fragile following May`s crash.

“When Elon Musk tweets any crypto-related content, the market … expects a reaction,” said Nick Spanos, co-founder of ZAP Protocol, a crypto project in Switzerland.

Bitcoin`s fall pushed it below its 20-day moving average to as low as $36,263 and took some of the edges off its week-to-date gains. It is up 2% so far this week.

`TROLLING THE COMMUNITY`?

Musk has been a major promoter of cryptocurrencies but has turned critical of bitcoin since suspending Tesla plans to take it in payment for cars, owing to concerns about its energy use. Many crypto specialists have struggled to understand the motives behind his tweets.

“He`s trolling the community,” said Bobby Ong, co-founder of crypto data aggregator and analytics website CoinGecko.

Bitcoin and several other cryptocurrencies are still recovering from a crash last month in the wake of that decision and on news of renewed regulatory scrutiny in China.

Telsa stock has now fallen by a third since it announced a $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase in February, and bitcoin is more than 40% below April`s record peak of $64,895.22.

The second-biggest cryptocurrency, ether, which tends to move in tandem with bitcoin, also extended losses through the day. It was last down 8% at $2,626 though on course for a second consecutive weekly gain.

Dogecoin, the cryptocurrency perhaps most sensitive to Musk`s opinions as he helped to turn the coin started as a joke into a multi-billion dollar market valuation, also fell by more than 10% to around $0.36 on Friday.

Fake promised giveaways by celebrities such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk are being used by scammers to cash in on interest in cryptocurrencies, the US Federal Trade Commission said on Monday in noting a jump in complaints about cryptocurrency fraud since October.

In one type of scam, people are told that if they give a certain amount of cryptocurrency to a “celebrity” they will get more back.

“People have reported sending more than $2 million in cryptocurrency to Elon Musk impersonators over just the past six months,” the FTC said.

Musk had been a supporter of cryptocurrencies but recently knocked dogecoin by calling it “a hustle” on national television. He has also recently said that bitcoin would not be accepted to buy a Tesla because of the environmental costs associated with mining it.

Scammers also impersonate government authorities or a potential romantic partner, the FTC said.

Overall, nearly 7,000 people reported losses of more than $80 million since October, with a median loss of $1,900, the agency said. That`s twelve times more reports of scams than the same period a year earlier, the agency said.

People in their 20s and 30s were the biggest victims, reporting losing much more money on investment and cryptocurrency fraud than any other type of scam. Older people, over 50, were less likely to report falling for the scams but when they did the losses were bigger, with a median loss of $3,250.

Bitcoin rallied from a three-month low on Monday in a volatile session that saw investors initially selling and then buying cryptocurrencies in the wake of Tesla boss Elon Musk`s tweets about the carmaker`s bitcoin holdings.

In his latest tweet, Musk said “Tesla has not sold any bitcoin”. That seeming clarification came after weekend tweets hinted that Tesla was considering or may have already sold some of its massive holdings.

Musk has boosted crypto markets with his enthusiasm for the asset class but has lately roiled trade by appearing to cool on bitcoin in favour of its one-time parody, dogecoin. The gyrations are beginning to spook even steeled traders.

Bitcoin fell more than 9% on Monday to as low as $42,185, its lowest since Feb. 8, but rallied back to around $45,190 as of 0911 GMT.

Ether, linked to the ethereum blockchain, fell to as low as $3,123.94, and then bounced back to $3,540. Dogecoin fell nearly 7%, and all three are well under recent records.

“A nice pop, but this is small versus the Musk-induced selling that has been taking place lately,” said Neil Wilson, chief market analyst at Markets.com. “There is nothing new I can say about bitcoin – volatile, highly speculative, easy to manipulate; a bubble.”

Tesla disclosed in February that it had bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin in the first quarter. At the end of April, Musk said the company sold 10% of its holdings “to prove liquidity”.

Bitcoin, designed as a payment tool, is little used for commerce in major economies, hampered by high volatility and relatively costly transactions.

The most popular digital currency is now down a third from its record high in mid-April and JPMorgan`s crunching of fund flow data shows investors exiting positions in recent weeks.

On Wednesday, Musk said Tesla would stop taking bitcoin as payment, owing to environmental concerns about energy use to process transactions. Defending that decision on Sunday, he suggested Tesla may have sold its own holdings.

An unverified Twitter account called @CryptoWhale, said https://bit.ly/2QsUQkw: “Bitcoiners are going to slap themselves next quarter when they find out Tesla dumped the rest of their #Bitcoin holdings. With the amount of hate @elonmusk is getting, I wouldn`t blame him…”

In response, Musk wrote: “Indeed.”

It was not clear whether he was confirming sales or whether he referred only to the fact that he had faced criticism, until his clarification in Monday`s tweet.

Musk said Tesla would not sell its bitcoin, but the cryptocurrency has dropped by almost a quarter since Musk`s reversal on Tesla taking it as payment.

Dogecoin has also yet to fully recover from Musk describing it as a “hustle”, although he did boost the price last week by saying he was working to improve its efficiency.

For an asset class that has surged this year, with dogecoin up about a hundredfold, ether up more than fourfold and bitcoin gaining 45%, some are beginning to call time on the wild ride.

After applying brakes on Bitcoin as a payment mode to buy Tesla vehicles, Elon Musk has now revealed that he might create his own cryptocurrency in the near future.

A Twitter user asked the Tesla head why he is not creating his own cryptocurrency.

“Why not just make a crypto from scratch that does everything you want technically and has a lot of dev support and doesn`t have a high concentration of ownership at least initially?” a user asked Musk on Saturday.

“Only if Doge can’t do it. Big pain in the neck to create another one,” Musk replied.

Musk has announced not to use the popular cryptocurrency Bitcoin as a payment mode to buy its electric vehicles, citing environmental harm.

Musk said that the electric car maker will not sell any bitcoin and intends to use bitcoin for transactions as soon as mining moves to more sustainable energy.

“We are also looking at other cryptocurrencies that use <1 percent of bitcoin`s energy/transaction,” Musk said in a tweet.

Bitcoin nosedived more than 11 percent after the tweet and was trading at nearly $50,000.

The company had only just started accepting Bitcoin in late March. Musk also said that Tesla will no longer sell any more of the $1.5 billion Bitcoins it purchased earlier this year.

Musk who also hosted the Saturday Night Live show on TV last weekend promoted Dogecoin which is the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market value.

Amid the surge in Bitcoin and Ether cryptocurrencies, Dogecoin has surged more than 659 percent this year. However, it has a long way to go.

With his cult following, Tesla boss Elon Musk has amassed considerable power to move markets with his musings, but murky rules make it difficult for regulators to rein him in.

The celebrity CEO, who boasts more than 54 million Twitter followers and has a devoted constituency on Reddit, has whipsawed the cryptocurrency market and sent some stocks soaring this year with a series of tweets and business announcements.

That power was in evidence this week. A Musk tweet on Wednesday that Tesla would no longer accept payments in bitcoin sent the cryptocurrency tumbling 17%, roiling bitcoin futures and dragging down the broader cryptocurrency market.

Dogecoin had an even wilder ride this week, first spiralling downward after Musk called it “a hustle” during the US “Saturday Night Live” TV show. Hours later, it jumped when Musk announced his commercial rocket company SpaceX would accept it for payment.

The upstart cryptocurrency received a further bump on Thursday when Musk said he was involved in work to improve its transaction efficiency.

While consumer advocates said Musk was hurting investors and making a mockery of the public markets, it was unclear that he was breaking any rules simply by wielding his influence.

“The problem here is that a loose cannon CEO continues to shoot his mouth off about any number of potential market-moving events,” said Dennis Kelleher, CEO of think tank Better Markets. “It`s clearly grossly irresponsible but it may not be illegal.”

A spokesman for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk`s tweets about dogecoin in recent months triggered a rally in the digital currency, which started as a social media parody. Near worthless in late 2020, dogecoin has surged to become the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, according to CoinMarketCap.com.

Other tweets this year about retailer GameStop and online marketplace Etsy also appeared to boost their shares, while investors mistakenly snapped up shares in device maker Signal Advance believing it was the trading ticker for chat app Signal, which Musk had endorsed.

However, lawyers said Musk would need to move an asset price with the aim of enriching himself or people close to him, or operate with inside information, to fall foul of the law. Reuters could not ascertain Musk`s asset holdings.

For some, the multi-billionaire is no different from top investors like Warren Buffett or Ray Dalio, who were influencing markets long before Musk. And Musk`s use of social media to reach people directly may have muddied the legal waters in his favor.

“In the past, access to these leaders were filtered through staff and press releases. Now, the general public must evaluate this information directly,” said Timothy Shields, a partner at law firm Kelley Kronenberg who focuses on technology.

“Where Musk`s speech reflects himself personally versus Telsa is very difficult for regulators to separate and therefore regulate.”

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which regulates bitcoin derivatives, did not respond to requests for comment. A spokesperson for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said that as a matter of course, the SEC and US exchanges “monitor for suspicious activities across regulated markets.”

SEC SETTLEMENT

Musk has crossed the line before. In August 2018, he sent Tesla`s shares soaring with a tweet that he had “funding secured” to take Tesla private, when he was not even close.

The SEC subsequently fined Musk $20 million for securities fraud and Tesla $20 million for inadequate disclosures and controls over Musk`s Twitter account. The SEC also ordered Tesla to vet any material public communications Musk made regarding Tesla.

But just months later, the SEC said that Musk violated that settlement with a tweet about Tesla`s production outlook that had not been vetted. Musk`s attorneys contested the allegation, saying the Tweet was old news and not material.

The SEC subsequently tightened Tesla`s settlement by detailing a raft of issues Musk was barred from riffing about without approval.

Lawyers said Musk`s Wednesday tweet on Tesla`s bitcoin about-face was carefully crafted and, as such, did not appear to breach that settlement.

Philip Moustakis of law firm Seward & Kissel said Musk and Tesla could in theory get into hot water if the statement was false or misleading, for example, if Tesla had sold bitcoin before the announcement. But, he added, “I would be surprised.”

Bitcoin was pinned near its lowest in more than two months on Friday and headed for its worst week since February, while dogecoin leapt by a fifth as tweets from Tesla boss Elon Musk sent the two cryptocurrencies on a wild ride.

Markets have gyrated to Musk tweets for months since his interest in dogecoin sparked a hundred-fold rally in the previously ignored token`s value this year, while Tesla`s $1.5 billion bitcoin purchase helped it break past $50,000 in February.

Yet in an equally surprising U-turn he dented the world`s biggest cryptocurrency this week after announcing Tesla stopped accepting bitcoin in payment owing to environmental concerns, making investors uneasy about Musk`s influence on crypto prices.

Bitcoin is down nearly 15% this week at $49,804.

Dogecoin is down about a third since last Friday, having tumbled after Musk referred to it as a “hustle” on Saturday Night Live. It then jumped 20% after his latest comments that he was involved in work to improve its efficiency.

“Working with Doge devs to improve system transaction efficiency. Potentially promising,” Musk said on Twitter, vaulting dogecoin from about $0.43 to $0.52 on the Binance exchange.

It was unclear if Musk was referring to efficiency in terms of energy use, ease of use or suitability as a currency, said Mark Humphery-Jenner, an associate professor of finance at the University of New South Wales business school in Sydney.

Dogecoin consumes 0.12 kilowatt-hours of electricity per transaction compared with 707 for bitcoin, according to data center provider TRG, but it is near impossible to use it to buy anything.

SPECULATIVE FRENZY

Almost worthless in late 2020, dogecoin is the latest darling of a frenzy gripping crypto markets that began last year as institutional investors announced big bitcoin purchases.

It has surged to become the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, according to CoinMarketCap.com. Second-biggest cryptocurrency ether has also soared more than 400% this year. It last sat at $3,865, steady for the week so far.

The huge moves have begun to attract regulatory scrutiny, and a Bloomberg report on Thursday which said major exchange Binance was under Justice Department investigation in the U.S. added to some of the price pressure on cryptos this week.

Musk`s tweets and the market’s response may also invite attention, said Edward Moya, an analyst at brokerage OANDA.

“Tesla is drawing tremendous scrutiny for Musk`s cheerleading of Bitcoin,” he said. “If Tesla unveils a bet on dogecoin, regulators may have their eyes on Musk.”

Others, however, say the market might be more comparable to an old-fashioned bubble.

“Dogecoin remains a lesson in greater fool theory,” said David Kimberley, an analyst at investing app Freetrade, which posits that buying overpriced assets can be profitable, so long as there is a “greater fool” to buy them at ever-higher prices.

“It’s being pumped by people that want to get rich quick (and Elon Musk),” he said.

Users of course had their fun in the comment section as some responses read: “Cool goats… Richer than all of us here.”; “Bitcoin looks high”, “Can you take me in ? I can start life afresh as a goat”.

There were mentions of Dogecoin as well with people writing: “Did you name any chickens Doge?”, “Now u just need a dog named Dogecoin”; “Get the 3rd one by the name of Doge Coin”.

The enthusiasm over the post was not just restricted to Facebook but also as expected spilled on to Twitter. Crypto enthusiasts wondered if the Facebook founder supports Bitcoin, that he is a “Bitcoin maximalist”. Many speculated whether a major announcement can be expected.

 
 
 

However, the Bitcoin excitement reminded netizens of a rather weird incident revealed by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. In 2011, Zuckerberg is said to have put up a “personal challenge” wherein he only ate what he killed.

“We go in the dining room.. He puts the goat down. It was cold. That was memorable. I don’t know if it went back in the oven. I just ate my salad”.

Sharing the memory, a Facebook user in the comment section wrote: “Are you going to murder these and feed them to guests?”

Well, we can only hope that Bitcoin and Max are spared to meet such a bloody fate. 

Billionaire Elon Musk and cryptocurrency aficionado on Tuesday asked his 54 million followers on Twitter “Do you want Tesla to accept Doge?”, a digital currency worth roughly 48 cents with no real world use.

The question, in the form of a Twitter poll, comes days after he called dogecoin a “hustle”, which sent the meme-inspired cryptocurrency`s price reeling after a 700% rally in a month.

A proponent of digital currencies, Musk made the comment as guest-host spot on the “Saturday Night Live” comedy sketch TV show this past weekend.

Musk, one of the richest people in the world, has used his candid Twitter feed to convey his opinion on cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, most times impacting their price.

In March, Musk said US customers could purchase Tesla vehicles with bitcoin, marking a significant step forward for the cryptocurrency`s use in commerce. The electric-car maker had bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin earlier this year, propelling its prices to record highs.

The Tesla chief executive`s poll on dogecoin received over a million responses in three hours since he posted it, with over two-thirds of the respondents voting to ratify the new payment method.

It comes just days after he said that SpaceX would accept dogecoin as payment to launch a lunar mission next year.

The limited supply of bitcoin helps drive its value as the digital currency gradually gains acceptance for commercial transactions. Whereas Dogecoin, which began as a social media joke in 2013, has an unlimited supply and remains seldom used to make payments for goods.

On crypto data tracker CoinGecko.com, dogecoin jumped more than 700% over the last month and is now the fourth-largest digital currency. It hit a record high Thursday above $0.73.

The billionaire`s tweets have drawn SEC scrutiny in the past, but his recent remarks about cryptocurrencies have not landed in him in any regulatory troubles so far.

On Sunday Geometric Energy Corporation issued an statement in which they announced the dogecoin-funded mission without disclosing the mission’s financial value.

The billionaire Tesla Inc chief executive hosted the show at 11:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday (0330 GMT on Sunday).

Cryptocurrency enthusiasts had for days been eager to see what he would say, after his tweets this year turned the once-obscure digital currency into a speculator`s dream.

Asked `what is dogecoin`, Musk replied, “It’s the future of currency. It’s an unstoppable financial vehicle that’s going to take over the world.”

When a show cast member Michael Che countered, “So, it’s a hustle?”, Musk replied, “Yeah, it’s a hustle.” And laughed.

Musk is the rare business mogul to have been asked to host the venerable comedy TV show. The timing puts Musk back in the spotlight just as Tesla`s stock is losing steam following last year`s monster rally.

The unconventional CEO has posted numerous comments about cryptocurrencies on Twitter and criticized regular old cash for having negative real interest rates.

“Only a fool wouldn’t look elsewhere,” he said in February.

His cryptic tweets “Doge” and “Dogecoin is the people`s crypto” that month kicked off a rally in dogecoin – created as a parody on the more mainstream bitcoin and ethereum.

On Thursday, Musk tweeted: “Cryptocurrency is promising, but please invest with caution!” with a video clip attached in which he said, “it should be considered speculation at this point. And so, you know, don`t don`t go too far in the crypto speculation …”

But he also said, in the video, that cryptocurrency has a “good chance” of becoming what he called “the future currency of the Earth.”

On crypto data tracker CoinGecko.com, dogecoin has jumped more than 800% over the last month and is now the fourth-largest digital currency, with a market capitalization of $73 billion. It hit a record high Thursday above $0.73.

It has overtaken more widely used cryptocurrencies such as litecoin and tether.

Tesla said in February it bought $1.5 billion worth of bitcoin and would soon accept it as a form of payment for its electric cars, a large stride toward mainstream acceptance that sent bitcoin soaring to a record high of nearly $62,000.

Tesla shares closed 1.3% higher at $672.37 on Friday.
