New Delhi: On Friday, the ‘Graded Response Action Plan’ (GRAP) was approved by the DDMA in presence of the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal, Chief Secretary of Delhi and other concerned officials. With this plan, confusions regarding imposing a lockdown or when it will be lifted will no longer persist. Delhi Government is taking all the necessary steps to prevent the spread of the Delta Plus variant of COVID-19 in Delhi. CM Arvind Kejriwal said that now that the GRAP is going in view of the public, there will be a sense of certainty and accountability on the Government’s part towards the citizens of Delhi.

The plan descriptively elaborates upon when the lockdown will be imposed and when it will be lifted. The Delhi government is administering vaccines on a war footing, but due to their unavailability time and again in between, the pace is slowing down. CM Kejriwal added that if Delhi gets a regular stock of vaccines, the Delhi government will be able to immunise maximum population in minimum time. He said that the authorities can’t let their guards down and the preparation for the roadmap of an impending third wave is being worked upon consistently by the Delhi government.

Briefing the officials present in the DDMA meeting, CM Arvind Kejriwal said, “This graded response action plan is of extreme importance. As you all know, every weekend we sit down to discuss the future course of action and prepare a roadmap for the pandemic to decide what all must be opened and what all must not be. However, this decision is a bit subjective. Now that this plan is going in front of the public, there will be a sense of certainty and accountability on our part towards the people of Delhi. The plan descriptively elaborates upon when the lockdown will be imposed and when it will be lifted. I don’t know if any other state has done it or not, but this is something that should be adopted at the national level also.”

CM Kejriwal asserted, “Secondly, something that we must all ensure and adopt is conducting the vaccination programme on an aggressive scale. Only and only vaccination can save us from the third wave. The Delhi Government is administering vaccines at a fast pace, but due to unavailability of vaccines time and again, the speed decreases. Otherwise, all the staff, the healthcare workers, and doctors have collectively worked towards expanding the network of this vaccination drive on a large scale. If we get a regular stock of vaccines, we will be able to vaccinate the maximum population in minimum time.”

CM Kejriwal added that Delhi can’t let its guard down and the government is working on a war footing to prepare for an impending third wave. He added, “The preparations are going really well. So, I would like to thank all the experts who have been holding our hand and steering ahead the preparation of this roadmap. A huge thanks to them.”

The Graded Response Action Plan was prepared in comparison with ascent data of the four waves at specific positivity rate (0.5%, 1%, 2% & 5%). It was also considered on the basis of earlier four waves. Further details have been mentioned in the below sub-heads.

CM Kejriwal took to Twitter and stated, “’Graded Response Action Plan’ was passed in DDMA meeting today. There will be no doubt about when the lockdown will take place and when it will be lifted. In the meeting, there was also talk about the Delta+ (plus) variant of COVID-19, we have to stop this variant from spreading in Delhi, for which the government is taking all necessary steps.”

The collaborative study, “Sars-Cov-2 B.1.617.2 Delta Variant Emergence and Vaccine Breakthrough: Collaborative Study”, from India with scientists from Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease is yet to be peer-reviewed.

The samples were taken from healthcare workers in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, and Northern Railway Central Hospital. The study found that the B.1.617.2 Delta variant not only dominates vaccine-breakthrough infections with higher respiratory viral loads compared to non-Delta infections (Ct value of 16.5 versus 19) but also generates greater transmission among the fully vaccinated HCWs. It revealed that in vitro, the Delta variant is approximately eight-fold less sensitive to vaccine-elicited antibodies compared to Wuhan-1.

“Across all scenarios considered, our results suggest the Delta variant is both more transmissible and better able to evade prior immunity elicited by the previous infection compared to previously circulating lineages,” the findings of the study read.

Dr. Chand Wattal, the chairperson of the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, SGRH, said according to PTI, “From this study, it appears that we have miles to go before we sleep in case of COVID-19 pandemics. These mutations are bound to happen if we lower our guard and allow ourselves to fall prey to this virus, giving it an opportunity to multiply.”

“This is a straight eye-opener to the fully vaccinated people that you cannot lower guard in the name of vaccination. The virus is on the prowl, still looking for its prey. This mutant has come back with enhanced spike proteins for attachment to the lung epithelial cells which have provided it with a much higher capacity to infect many more people than the Wuhan strain,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

These combined epidemiological and in vitro data indicate that the dominance of the Delta variant in India has been most likely driven by a combination of evasion of neutralising antibodies in previously infected individuals and increased virus infectivity resulting in the second wave, the study said.

While severe disease in fully vaccinated HCWs was rare, breakthrough transmission clusters in hospitals associated with the Delta variant are concerning and indicate that infection control measures need to continue in the post-vaccination era, it said.

Based on recent data and the dominance of new infections by this variant, the B.1.167.2 Delta variant appears more transmissible than B.1.1.7 in the UK, it added.

“In the absence of published data on the transmissibility of the Delta variant, we predict that this variant will have a transmission advantage relative to Wuhan-1 with D614G in individuals with pre-existing immunity from vaccine/natural infection as well as in settings where there is low vaccine coverage and low prior exposure,” the study stated.

Lower protection against B.1.351, the variant with the least sensitivity to neutralising antibodies, has been demonstrated for at least three vaccines. However, progression to severe disease and death was low in all studies, it said.

Therefore, at population scale, extensive vaccination will likely protect against moderate to severe disease and will reduce hospitalisation due to the Delta variant, it said.

Hyderabad: Continuing its special drive for vaccination of the 18-44 year age group, Telangana has administered over 1.17 lakh doses for this beneficiary group. A total of 1,68,143 doses were administered on Saturday of which 1,41,507 were inoculated for the first dose and 26,636 second dose. According to the Director of Public Health, Dr G Srinivasa Rao, 1,17,254 people in the 18-44 age group were vaccinated. Of them, 5,985 received the second dose.

The health department on July 1 rolled out vaccination for 18-44. The state initiated vaccination at 100 designated centres in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits with prior online booking using the Co-WIN portal. It was also launched at 204 centres in urban local bodies with prior online booking using the Co-WIN portal and at 636 rural primary health centres in walk-in mode.

Covid 3rd wave may see half the cases recorded during second surge, says govt panel scientist

A possible third wave of coronavirus infection can hit its peak between October-November if Covid-appropriate behaviour is not followed, but it may see half the daily cases recorded during the second surge, said a scientist of a government panel tasked with modelling of COVID-19 cases.

However, Covid infection can spread faster during the third wave if any new virulent variant of SARS-CoV-2 emerges, said Manindra Agarwal who is working with the Sutra Model– the mathematical projection of the COVID-19 trajectory.

The panel was formed by the Department of Science and Technology last year to forecast the surge of coronavirus cases using mathematical models.

Besides Agarwal, who is a scientist with IIT-Kanpur, the panel also has M Vidyasagar, another scientist with IIT-Hyderabad, and Lt. Gen Madhuri Kanitkar, Deputy Chief (Medical) of Integrated Defence Staff, as members.

The panel had earlier received flak for not predicting the ferocity of the second wave of COVID-19 in the country.

Covid vaccine update: India will have another option for the vaccine in the next 2-3 days as Indian drugmaker Cipla Ltd has received regulatory approval to distribute partner Moderna Inc’s COVID-19 vaccine in the country.

With this, Moderna’s vaccine will be the fourth shot authorized for use in India, after AstraZeneca and partner Serum Institute of India’s Covishield, Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin and Sputnik V developed by Russia’s Gamaleya Institute.

With concerns surrounding the Delta coronavirus variant rising globally, it is necessary to know how effective is the mRNA vaccine against new variants.

Covid-19 mRNA vaccines have demonstrated high efficacy in clinical trials — Moderna’s vaccine was found to have an impressive 94 per cent efficacy in phase 3 trials in the US — but require ultra-cold storage systems.

A new CDC study reported that a single dose of Pfizer’s or Moderna’s COVID vaccine was 80% effective in preventing infections. That number jumped to 90% two weeks after the second dose, the study on vaccinated health care workers showed.

Moderna also announced Tuesday that a new study showed its vaccine also produced promising protection in a lab setting against the Delta variant and others currently circulating.

“As we seek to defeat the pandemic, it is imperative that we are proactive as the virus evolves. We remain committed to studying emerging variants, generating data, and sharing it as it becomes available. These new data are encouraging and reinforce our belief that the Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine should remain protective against newly detected variants,” Stéphane Bancel, chief executive officer of Moderna, said in a statement.

The government has also reiterated in recent Health Ministry briefings that Pfizer may be coming to India, soon. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla had in June said his firm was in the final stages of getting approval for its Covid-19 vaccine from the Indian government, adding that when approved, the pharma giant will supply one billion doses to India within this year.

New Delhi: Amid the fear of spread of Delta variant in the country, a study found that COVID-19 recovered individuals with one or two doses of vaccine have relatively higher protection in comparison to those administered either one or two doses of Covishield.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), National Institute of Virology, Pune, and Department of Neurosurgery, Command Hospital (Southern Command), Armed Forces Medical College conducted the study ‘Neutralisation of Delta Variant with Sera of Covishield vaccines and COVID-19 Recovered Vaccinated Individuals’, which is yet to be peer-reviewed.

News agency PTI quoted the report stating that prior vaccination results in less severe disease against subsequent infection provide evidence that both humoral and cellular immune response play an important role in protection.

“The high transmissibility associated with Delta variant led to second wave of the pandemic in India which affected millions of people. Besides this, variant of concerns have been reported to show lower neutralisation to several approved vaccines. This has led to breakthrough infections after completion of vaccination regimen,” the study said.

The joint study evaluated immune response in sera of the Covishield vaccinated individuals belonging to categories– one dose vaccinated, two doses vaccinated, COVID-19 recovered plus one dose vaccinated, COVID-19 recovered plus two doses vaccinated and breakthrough COVID-19 cases. The results demonstrated that the breakthrough cases and COVID-19 recovered individuals with one or two dose of vaccine had relatively higher protection against Delta variant.

“Prior vaccination results in less severe disease against subsequent infection provide evidence that both humoral and cellular immune response play an important role in protection,” the study added.

The significant report has emerged at the time when B.1.617 lineage has created grave havoc in the country. It became worrisome when it further mutated to generate sub-lineages B.1.617.1 (Kappa), B.1.617.2 (Delta) and B.1.617.3. the World Health Organisation has described this sub-lineage as variant of concern as it dominated the other variants.

Key findings of the analysis:

77.8% effective against symptomatic Covid-19, through evaluation of 130 confirmed cases, with 24 observed in the vaccine group versus 106 in the placebo group.

93.4% effective against severe symptomatic Covid-19.

12% of subjects experiencing commonly known side effects and less than 0.5% of subjects feeling serious adverse events.

Covaxin demonstrated 63.6% protection against asymptomatic Covid-19.

Efficacy data showed 65.2% protection against the SARS-CoV-2, B.1.617.2 Delta variant.

According to Bharat Biotech, Covaxin is the first licensed Covid-19 vaccine to report promising efficacy against asymptomatic infections based on qPCR testing. This will help in reducing disease transmission, the company said.

In response to the fresh efficacy data, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research Dr Balram Bhargava said that Covaxin will “immensely contribute to protect the global community against the deadly SARS-CoV-2 virus” apart from benefiting Indian citizens.

“I am delighted to note that Covaxin, developed by ICMR and Bharat Biotech under an effective public-private partnership, has demonstrated an overall efficacy of 77.8 per cent in India’s largest Covid Phase 3 clinical trial thus far. Our scientists at ICMR and BBIL have worked tirelessly to deliver a truly effective vaccine of the highest international standards. The successful development of Covaxin has consolidated the position of Indian academia and industry in the global arena,” Dr Bhargava said.

The press release also stated that it has been specifically designed to meet the needs of global distribution chains, the requirements for which are more critical in low- and middle-income countries. It has been formulated to enable shipping and long-term storage at 2-8ºC. It is also formulated to adhere to a multi-dose vial policy, thereby reducing open vial wastage, saving money to procurement agencies and governments alike.

New Delhi: The Indian government is in talks with the American pharma company Johnson & Johnson regarding their single-dose coronavirus vaccine, NITI Aayog (Member) Health Dr. V.K. Paul on Friday informed.

“We are in talks with Johnson & Johnson regarding their single-dose vaccine. Their vaccine is being produced outside,” he said while addressing a routine health briefing on Covid-19. Dr. Paul added that “as per the plan, this vaccine will also be produced in Hyderabad’s Bio E”.

The remarks of India’s Covid Task Force chief come as Johnson and Johnson had earlier in a statement said the company is “working with Biological E on the manufacturing of the J&J Covid-19 vaccine”.

“We believe Biological E. will be an important part of our global Covid-19 vaccine supply network, where multiple manufacturing sites are involved in the production of our vaccine across different facilities, sometimes in different countries and continents, before the vaccine can be distributed,” the American pharma company added.

Earlier on Thursday, Johnson & Johnson had said its single-shot Covid-19 vaccine has shown promising signs of protection against the Delta variant rapidly spreading across the US and other countries.

The findings were confirmed after a small laboratory study, according to the company report where the vaccine exhibited strong, persistent activity against the new Delta and other highly prevalent SARS-CoV-2 viral variants.

Currently, four Covid-19 vaccines, including Covishield, Covaxin, Sputnik-V, and Moderna, are allowed for emergency use in the country.

The Hague: The European Medicines Agency (EMA) on Thursday said data shows that two doses of Covid vaccine appear to provide protection against the rapidly spreading Delta variant of the coronavirus.

Marco Cavaleri, the EMA head of vaccine strategy, said the “emerging data from real world evidence are showing that two doses of vaccines are protective against the Delta variant”.

READ: Canada And US Record Highest-Ever Temperature, Hundreds Of People Feared Dead

Cavaleri, who was speaking at a press conference, asserted the Amsterdam-based watchdog was “aware of concerns caused by the rapid spread of the Delta variant”.

“Right now it seems the four vaccines approved in the European Union are protecting against all the strains circulating in Europe, including the Delta variant,” he said, AFP reported.

This assessment came as the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that the variant first spotted in India could fuel a new wave of cases in Europe.

Four vaccines, including Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech, are currently approved for use in the European Union.

Covid Vaccine: The vaccination campaign is taking place around the country to curb the deadly coronavirus. There has been a significant increase in the vaccination campaign since June 21 and about 4.61 crore doses have been given in 8 days.

In June, on average, 40.3 lakh doses were given every day. Whereas between June 21 and 28, an average of 57.68 lakh people were vaccinated daily. So far, a total of 33 crore 57 lakh 16 thousand people have been vaccinated in the country.

India moved ahead on inoculation for an 8-day average period

Iraq – 4.02 crores

Canada – 3.77 crores

Saudi Arabia – 3.48 crores

And Malaysia vaccinated 3.23 crore of its population.

Different age groups, different vaccination rates?

About 49% of the population aged 60 years or more has received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

There are around 209 million people between the ages of 45 years and 59 years out of which 42% of people have been given the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

About 15% of the 597 million people in the age group of 18 to 44 years have been given the first dose of the vaccine.

Between May 1 and June 24, 56% of the doses were given in rural areas, while 44% of the vaccine dose were provided in urban areas.

Tripura made record

Significantly, Tripura has administered the first dose of the vaccine to 98% of the people in the age group of 45 and above, which is a record made by any state in India.

However, there are many states which have vaccinated 60% of the people above the age of 45 years. These states are Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Kerala, Mizoram, Sikkim and Uttarakhand.

India vs Corona 3.0 e-Conclave LIVE: ABP News spoke to Dr. Sanjay Rai of AIIMS, Delhi & Dr. CM Singh of AIIMS, Patna to understand whether children are really the most vulnerable group of the third wave. They also talked about the amount of time that could take for the Covid vaccine for children.

‘Based on the serosurvey conducted in India, the previous waves have infected children as much as adults. However, children either showed no symptoms or very mild symptoms which is why many assume that the third wave would be very dangerous for children but that’s not the case. People who haven’t been infected with the virus till now are at risk of getting the infection whether they are children or adults’, said Dr. Sanjay Rai.

ALSO READ: ‘Third Wave Won’t Hit India If People Follow Covid Guidelines’: Dr Navneet Wig, Chairman AIIMS Task Force

Dr. CM Singh says ‘that the vaccine trials on children are still going on and that children of the age groups 6-12 and 12-18 have been given the first dose, right now we are administering vaccine on children aged between 2-6. Just like with the adults we administer the second dose after 28 days, after 56 days we will conduct an antibody test on the children that’s when we will know how much seroconversion happening. If evidence suggests that the conversion rate is good then we will send the data to DCGI if they find that the rate is acceptable then we might get the approval to administer to children. It will likely take 3-4 months to get the approval but there are many factors to be taken into consideration.

Talking about the need for people to keep adhering to Covid appropriate behaviour, Dr. Sanjay Rai said, the only way we can control the third way is by limiting the susceptible population and that is through vaccines. However, if we are unable to vaccinate the maximum population quickly then there a chance for the third wave to be very severe. Vaccinated people still have the risk of contracting the virus but it is most likely going to be mild almost like a common cold, vaccines reduce the severity of the disease and drastically bring down the mortality rate.

People are being careless when it comes to adhering with Covid appropriate behaviours and if people continue to be lax then it is possible that in the next few months we may see the third wave. However, children are just as susceptible as adults as we have seen in the previous waves, but children did show mild or no symptoms which is likely going to be the case during the third wave; so there really is no need to panic too much. Of course, we should head towards normalcy but with Covid appropriate behaviours and make sure we get vaccinated as soon as possible.

AstraZeneca began trials for modified booster vaccine against Beta variant of COVID-19. On Sunday, AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford started fresh trials to test an improved vaccine against the Beta form, which was first discovered in South Africa.

Around 2,250 people from the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil, and Poland will take part in the ‘booster’ vaccine trial. The individuals involved in the trial will include those who have received two doses of the original Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccination or a Pfizer mRNA vaccine, along with those who have not received the vaccine at all.

“Testing booster doses of existing vaccines and a new variant, vaccines are important to ensure we are best prepared to stay ahead of the pandemic coronavirus, should their use be needed,” said Andrew Pollard, chief investigator, and director of the Oxford Vaccine Group at the University of Oxford.

If the experts of the country are to be believed, despite Britain carrying out a successful vaccine rollout program, uncertainty about how long the protection of the vaccine will last in a person’s body still remains.

According to Maheshi Ramasamy, Principal Investigator at the Oxford Vaccine Group, “this study will provide vital evidence on whether further doses including ‘tweaks’ against new virus variants may be needed in the future”.

The first results of these trials are expected to be released later this year.

The existing vaccines are thought to be less efficacious against the Beta version, however, the Delta variant which developed in India, is the reason for the most concern right now.

Despite the fact that the primary vaccines are considered to be highly efficient at avoiding serious illness, the Delta variant’s infectious characteristics have resulted in an increase in cases in some countries, including the United Kingdom. The UK saw a rise of 35.204 cases in the last week taking the total case tally to 111,157.

New Delhi: Yet again the roll-out of Russian jab ‘Sputnik V’ has been delayed at various private hospitals in the Delhi-NCR region. Indraprastha Apollo Hospital in the national capital had earlier said that it would tentatively start administering the two-dose vaccine by June 25 however, spokesman from the hospital said that authorities do not have clarity on the dates of the vaccine roll-out as yet.

“We do not have a clarity on the dates of the vaccine roll-out,” a spokesman of Apollo Hospitals told PTI.

Besides Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital has also not received Sputnik V doses so far from Hyderabad-based Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.

An official from the hospital reportedly said, “There is a delay on the part of the suppliers. They have not shared any specific reason for it. I think it could be related to the supply of both the doses together.”

As per Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government’s pricing schedule, Sputnik V has been priced at Rs 1,145, which will contain the hospital charges as well as the tax.

Sputnik V was developed by Russia’s Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology with the backing of its sovereign Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). Dr Reddy’s, which has the rights to distribute Sputnik V in India, obtained emergency use authorisation in April.

New Delhi: World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus while addressing a press conference of Friday asked for the cooperation of rich countries to provide poorer countries with the Covid-19 vaccines. Many are facing drastic shortages whereas richer countries were opening up and administering vaccines to children who aren’t at immediate risk.

In Africa, new infections and deaths jumped by nearly 40% last week compared to the previous week, the WHO Chief said that the situation is “so dangerous” as the Delta variant spreads globally.

“Our world is failing, as the global community we are failing,” he told a news conference according to Reuters.

“I mean that attitude has to be a thing of the past,” Tedros said while comparing the current state to the HIV/AIDS crisis when some argued that African nations were unable to use complicated treatments. “The problem now is a supply problem, just give us the vaccines.”

“The difference is between the haves and the have nots which is now completely exposing the unfairness of our world – the injustice, the inequality, let’s face it,” he said according to Reuters.

After India suspended vaccine exports, COVAX which is run jointly by the GAVI vaccine alliance and the WHO run into major supply issues. So far the alliance has delivered 90 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to 132 countries since February.

“We have through COVAX this month zero doses of AstraZeneca vaccines, zero doses of SII vaccines (Serum Institute of India), zero doses of J & J (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine,” said Bruce Aylward, WHO senior adviser was quoted by Reuters.

Meanwhile, WHO’s top emergency expert Mike Ryan said that many developing countries are much better than industrialized countries in carrying out mass vaccination of their populations against infectious diseases from cholera to polio.

New Delhi: As a massive vaccination campaign process began on 21st June, the Delhi government is being accused of moving the immunisation drive at a slow pace.

Responding to such allegations, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain questioned such a record vaccination drive on one day and the dismal numbers the next day. He said that, unlike Madhya Pradesh, at least Delhi is not vaccinating millions in a day and then not being able to clock even a thousand the next day.

“We are vaccinating 75,000-80,000 people every day. In Madhya Pradesh, even a percentage of what they recorded on 21st June could not be achieved the next day,” he told ABP News.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain To ABP News

Question- There are allegations that the pace of vaccination is slow in Delhi. What is the reason behind this and is it true?

Answer- Madhya Pradesh vaccinated millions in one day and wasn’t able to vaccinate even a thousand people the next day. We aren’t treating the vaccination drive as a show, photo op, or event. Vaccines are being administered to the people of Delhi on a regular basis. Everyone knows that there was a problem with vaccine availability and the vaccines that we have now will also get over in 10-12 days. We have to make arrangements for those who have to get the second dose, so the vaccine is being administered accordingly.

Question- The BJP and central government are alleging that there were about 8,50,000 doses for the 45+ age group and about 2,00,000-2,50,000 doses for the 18+ age group. But only a few thousand people were vaccinated in Delhi.

Answer- The vaccination is not just for one day. They are asking why people weren’t vaccinated that day. Well, we employ 75,000-80,000 people daily. The number of vaccinations has steadily increased from the day before yesterday to today. In MP, they couldn’t even achieve 1% of what they did the previous day. Is it better to vaccinate lots of people in a day or maintain a consistent number every day?

Question- Is the stock meant for the 45+ age group now being used for 18+? Have the age groups merged into one now?

Answer- The Centre has said they would be providing vaccines for everyone, so there’s no categorization. Everyone above 18 years of age is now in one common group. Earlier, there was a separate 60+ category, 45+ category, and 18+ category. It then became two categories – 18+ and 45+. Today onwards, there will be a single category – 18+.

Question- Will the first dose of Covaxin be administered to the people of Delhi?

Answer- There is still some shortage of Covaxin, so the centers for that vaccine are lesser in number. Covishield availability is better, so there are more centers administering that vaccine.

Question- Will people be able to get their first dose of Covaxin in the month of July?

Answer- The time frame for the second dose of Covaxin is short (28 days). Those who have taken the first dose will have to get their second dose on time. The Central Government has extended the time between two Covishield doses, due to which people aren’t coming for their second dose now. Only those who want the first dose are coming. After a few days, people will come to take the second jab, too.

Right now, there are about 50,00,000 people in Delhi who have got their first dose and 10,00,000-12,00,000 people who have got the second one. So, there are around 40,00,000 of them who will get the second dose, too.

Madhya Pradesh had vaccinated 3,12,000 people on 21st June and only 120 people yesterday. Haryana vaccinated 2,50,000 people yesterday and only 63,000 yesterday. They must have been preparing for this one-day event. Everyone was given the appointment on the same day. This was all just to prove that BJP led central government is taking lots of effort to battle coronavirus.

Question- Does it look like the hoarding was being done for a special event?

Answer- Yes, precisely.

Question- The 45+ stock will now be used for 18+ also, so is there any separate arrangement for this? Will more centers will be made available?

Answer- Now everything has become common, it has become one category. Anyone above 18 years of age is in one category. All centers will now be common.

Question- Can anyone go anywhere to get vaccinated, whether by appointment or even walk-in?

Answer- Even if you do not make an appointment, it will be done on a walk-in basis also.

(Excerpts from the Interview taken by Anjali Singh)

New Delhi: The vaccine has proved to be very effective in preventing death due to coronavirus infection. This has been revealed in a report released by the Indian Council of Medical Research and National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR-NIE). The report reveals that the first dose of the vaccine is up to 82 percent effective in preventing death. And if a person is given both doses, then it shoots up to 95 percent.

The research was conducted in Tamil Nadu to analyse the effect of vaccination. The Tamil Nadu Police Department is gathering information about the vaccination of its ‘jawans’ and the deaths during the second wave (besides hospitalization).

According to an Indian Express report, ICMR-NIE Director Dr. Manoj Murhekar said this data was used to estimate the deaths due to the coronavirus in policemen who weren’t vaccinated.

32,792 personnel had taken the first dose between 1st February and 14th May, while the number of people who took both doses was 67,673. 17,059 policemen did not get vaccinated.

The report reveals that between 13th April and 14th May 2021, 31 personnel died due to the coronavirus. There are over 1,17,000 policemen working in the Tamil Nadu Police Department.

The Sputnik vaccine is the third vaccine that has been given approval for emergency use in India aside from Covishield and Covaxin. The two-dose adenoviral vector-based coronavirus vaccine is being administered in select private hospitals for Rs 1,145 per dose.

Earlier, Russian sovereign fund RDIF on June 17 said its COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V will soon offer a booster shot, adjusted to work against the Delta variant of coronavirus, to other vaccine manufacturers. “Sputnik V is more efficient against the Delta variant of coronavirus first detected in India, than any other vaccine that published results on this strain so far – the Gamaleya Centre study submitted for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal,” the makers said further.

RDIF also announced that it will be launching a single-dose Sputnik Light vaccine which will be based on the Ad26 vector in India. The Delta variant, which was first detected in India in October was one of the deadliest outbreaks the country had seen since the beginning of the pandemic, the variant has further mutated to a Delta plus which many anticipate could be the third wave.

Experts say that fast vaccination and following social distancing protocols is the only measure to fight against the third wave.

On Tuesday, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr Anthony Fauci warned that the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus is the “greatest threat” to America’s attempt to eradicate the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a White House briefing on COVID-19, Fauci said the variant, which was first identified in India, now makes up more than 20 percent of all new cases in the US, a significant increase from nearly 10 percent two weeks ago.

The B.1.1.7 variant which is known as the Alpha variant by the World Health Organisation (WHO) was first discovered in Kent in September of last year. The strain, which has 23 known mutations so far, has become the dominant variant both in the UK and the United States.

New Delhi: Amid fears of a third wave of Covid-19, 76% parents, according to a survey, are not willing to send their children to school till cases in their district go to zero or children get vaccinated.

LocalCircles conducted six surveys since March 2020 on re-opening of schools and regularly escalated them to the Centre and state governments, which have been accepted.

Given the lack of online education in many rural parts of the country and the fatigue of online classes as well as the risk of Covid spread and the possibility of a third wave, LocalCircles conducted its next survey to understand the opinion of parents on sending their children to school.

READ: Centre Declares Delta Plus A ‘Variant Of Concern’; Puts Maharashtra, Kerala, MP On Alert

The survey, which also sought to know their opinion on vaccinating their children if the vaccine were to become available by September 2021, received more than 19,000 responses from parents located in 293 districts of the country.

In a related survey by LocalCircles earlier in January, 69% of parents wanted schools to reopen from April 2021 or after. This number has significantly dropped to 20% Indian parents willing to send their children to school if they were to open in July. There is growing evidence that the new strain is more harmful to children.

The same survey suggested that vaccination hesitancy among parents has reduced. While 26% Indian parents approved of the vaccine for their children in January 2021, the number has increased to 65% in June 2021.

65% Indian parents approve of their children receiving the Covid vaccine if it is made available by September; 21% want to wait at least till December.

This comes as the government in its daily briefing announced this week that opening schools will be difficult till major chunk of the population is vaccinated.

With the Covid-19 second wave seeing even children and infants getting infected with the coronavirus, the resumption of schools in such a scenario, according to medical experts, may lead to an increase in the number of cases.

Around 8,000 kids tested positive earlier in May alone in a district in Maharashtra. Recently, Meghalaya reported 5,000 cases of Covid in the age group 0-14. In the first wave, 4% of the infected population were children. This share has increased to about 10%-20% in the second wave.

So far, the mortality rate in children is low.

The Serum Institute of India is planning to start the trials of Novavax on children in July. Bharat Biotech has two vaccines that are being tried on children, Covaxin and BBV154, a one-shot nasal vaccine. ZyCov-D, the Zydus’ Covid-19 vaccine has also started trials on children in the age group 12-18 years.

The government is considering to provide legal indemnity to Pfizer and Moderna to roll out their vaccines in India. Pfizer has announced that its vaccine is safe for children above 12 years of age.

Three weeks ago a variant of the coronavirus was being termed as the “Indian variant”, after India’s objection it was renamed as the ‘Delta’ variant. Scientists say that another mutation occurred in the Delta variant that caused India’s second major Covid outbreak.

The new variant may also be able to evade the immunity provided by the vaccine. But mutations don’t always transform into worrisome viruses.

For example, the ‘Beta variant’, first found in South Africa, reduced the efficacy of all vaccines but did not spread to the rest of the world like the ‘Alpha variant’ (UK variant).

In fact, the B.1.617.1 variant already mutated to ‘484Q’ to evade the immunity provided by the vaccine, and yet Delta (B.1.617.2) is contagious without it.

Delta Is Super Spreader Variant

Delta is the main strain of the coronavirus detected in India. 91% of new cases in the UK are infected due to this variant. According to World Health Organization chief scientist, Soumya Swaminathan the cases of the Delta variant are doubling every two weeks in the US, and the virus is will soon spread all over the world.

The epidemiologist at Imperial College London, Neil Ferguson told New York Magazine that “Delta is the super spreader. The Alpha was also a super-spreader, but the Delta could be 60% more transmissible than this.”

According to Public Health England, Delta is at least 60% more transmissible within homes than Alpha.

Two Doses Of Covid-19 Vaccine Effective Against Delta Variant

Delta’s high transmissibility is due to the 452R and 478K mutations. Both the mutations attach better to human cells and evade immunity. While two doses still work well against it, a single dose provides limited protection.

Data from the UK shows that One-Shot gives 33% protection against Delta, compared to 51% against Alpha. So partially vaccinated people are now at higher risk of infection.

2.6 Times Higher Risk Of Hospitalisation

Delta is more likely to cause serious illness than Alpha. The Guardian informed in England says Delta increases the risk of hospitalization by 2.6 times. For example, a person infected with the Alpha variant can infect 4-5 people. But a person infected with Delta variant can infect 5-8 people.

Starting with two infected people, after 10 rounds of infection with Alpha, the total number of cases can be between 20 lakh and 20 million. At the same time, the number of cases with Delta can be from 20 million to 2 billion.

Not To Be Admitted If Infected After Single Dose

The good news is that the vaccination against the Delta variant is still highly effective. Although the chances of getting infected after a single dose are high, hospitalisation is less likely.

According to the BBC, a single dose of the vaccine reduces a person’s chances of infection and the need for hospitalization by 75%. The risk of hospitalization is reduced by 90% after two doses.

London: British scientists on Sunday (June 20) warned of a “pretty miserable winter” ahead for the country due to the likely emergence of new respiratory viruses, with further lockdowns a possibility.

Professor Calum Semple, member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), a British government advisory body, said that children and elderly people will be especially vulnerable to endemic viruses at the end of the year, Xinhua reported.

Describing it as the “fourth wave winter,” he told Times Radio “there`s a sting in the tail after every pandemic” because social distancing will have reduced people`s exposure to usual endemic respiratory viruses such as pneumonia and bronchiolitis.

“I suspect we`ll have a pretty miserable winter because the other respiratory viruses are going to come back and bite us quite hard,” he said. “But after that, I think we`ll be seeing business as normal next year.”

Meanwhile, Susan Hopkins, Public Health England`s director for COVID-19, warned “we may have to do further lockdowns this winter” depending on whether hospitals start to become overwhelmed.

“I think we will have alternative ways to manage this, through vaccination, through anti-virals, through drugs, through testing that we didn`t have last winter,” she told the BBC.

Scientists have warned that the third wave of coronavirus infections is “definitely underway” in England due to the fast spread of the Delta variant first identified in India, even though hospital admissions will hopefully not be on the same scale as in January.

The recent data published by Public Health England showed the AstraZeneca vaccine is 92 per cent effective against hospitalization from the Delta variant after two doses, and the Pfizer vaccine, 96 per cent effective.

More than 42.6 million people have been given the first jab of the coronavirus vaccine while more than 31 million people have been fully vaccinated with a second dose, according to the latest official figures.

Experts have warned that coronavirus may continue to evolve for years to come, and eventually, it is likely current vaccines will fail to protect against transmission, infection, or even against disease caused by newer variants.
(Inputs from agency)

New Delhi: India halted vaccination export when the second Covid wave hit the country and created devastation. While a massive inoculation drive is active in the country, the government has said that India is looking forward to helping other countries and begin the export of vaccines.

India, the largest vaccine manufacturer in the world, is looking to resume exports of Covid-19 doses after meeting domestic needs, the government has said.

“Once our immediate need of vaccinating a significant proportion of Indian people is achieved and vaccine stockpiles are visible from multiple sources, we would then like to provide vaccines to others,” said VK Paul, Niti Aayog member (health), in an interview with The Associated Press.

Paul said that a resumption of exports is still “very much on the radar”. But he did not reveal when the government might resume the export.

Paul defended the Indian government’s move to restrict vaccine exports in April as it battled a ferocious surge in infections. He noted that India had given away a “substantial” amount of vaccines at the start of the year as it launched its own immunization drive. “So that has to be respected and has to be recognized, as not many nations have done that,” he said.
Till January 2021, India had sent vaccine doses to 90 countries and when the drive stopped many nations were in lurch who looked for India to meet the requirements.

When are exports expected to resume?

A Reuters report last month claimed that India is unlikely to resume major exports of vaccines until at least October as it diverts shots for domestic use.

This longer-than-expected delay is set to worsen supply shortages from the global World Health Organisation-backed Covax initiative.

Local vaccine manufacturer Serum Institute of India had also stated that hopes to resume delivering its vaccines to Covax facility and other countries by the end of the year.

“We continue to scale up manufacturing and prioritize India. We also hope to start delivering to Covax and other countries by the end of the year,” the company said in a statement.

What are India’s local demands?

Currently, less than 5 per cent of India’s people are fully immunized, with experts cautioning that vaccination rates must go up significantly to protect a sizable chunk of the population by the end of the year. The hope is that India will achieve a rapid increase in inoculations in the coming months. Last month, Paul told reporters that about 2 billion doses could be available by December under a roadmap that depends on India’s two main suppliers — Serum Institue of India and Bharat Biotech.

But critics have said that both the manufactures are struggling to ramp up the vaccination drive. On this, Paul said that although it was an “optimistic” projection, it’s based on estimated by the manufacturers themselves and that the figure showed “there is the potential.

“We are also mindful of the fact that there are steps to be met,” he said, acknowledging the hurdles that manufacturers might face in procuring raw material and other processes.

He said India can expect to see at least 740 million doses between August and December. But this includes 300 million of a vaccine that is still in late testing and not yet available. More orders will be placed in the future, he added.

New Delhi: Studies have shown that vaccination reduces the chances of hospitalisation by 75-80 percent, while oxygen requirement comes down to 8 percent even after contracting COVID-19, the government said on Friday.

While addressing a press conference, NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr. V K Paul said in these studies, which have been conducted among healthcare workers who fall in high-risk group, also showed that the risk of ICU admission remains only 6 percent and the protection against infection was 94 percent.

ALSO READ: India Reports 60,753 New Infections; Active Cases Lowest After 74 Days

“Lives of thousands of healthcare workers have been saved by vaccination. Studies show that chances of hospitalization reduce by 75-80 percent after vaccination if they contract Covid. The possibility of oxygen requirement is around 8 percent and the risk of ICU admission is only 6 percent. The protection is 94 percent. These are reasonable sample-sized studies and they have been conducted in age groups where maximum risk is there,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

Paul said that in one particular study, there was one death out of 7,000 cases and it was also because the person had comorbidities.

“Similar studies in other countries have also shown the protection vaccine gives. I request people to please accept the vaccine and not hesitate… people might get infected even after that but it will not turn severe, lives will not be lost and by vaccination thousands and thousands of lives can be saved,” he said.

Citing a study on the prevalence of COVID-19 among children, Paul said it shows that seropositivity above and below 18 years of age is almost equivalent.

“Seropositivity rate above 18 years was 67 percent and below 18 years was 59 percent. So even at those places, where the more intense waves came, which were urban, the seropositivity among children and adults remained almost the same,” Paul said.

While a majority of healthcare experts predicted the vaccination drive would pick up significantly this year, they cautioned against an early removal of restrictions, as some states have done. On whether children and those under 18 years would be most at risk in a potential third wave, nearly two-thirds of experts in a Reuters poll, or 26 of 40, said yes.

“The reason being they are a completely virgin population in terms of vaccination because currently there is no vaccine available for them,” said Dr Pradeep Banandur, head of epidemiology department at National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) according to Reuters.

Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry Lav Agarwal said almost 85 percent decline has been noted in daily new cases of COVID-19 since the highest reported peak on May 7th. Also, 78.6 percent decline has been recorded in the total active Covid cases since the peak reported on May 10th.
