RIO DE JANEIRO: Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni paid tribute to Lionel Messi on Sunday, praising his team captain and revealing he played in the Copa America win over Brazil with an injury.

“If you knew the way that he played in Copa America you’d love him even more,” Scaloni told reporters after Argentina’s 1-0 win at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

“You can never do without a player like him, even when he is not fully fit like in this game and the previous one.”

Scaloni did not say what the injury was but he showered Messi with praise on a night Argentines took to the streets in huge numbers to celebrate their first international title in 28 years and Messi’s first victory with the national side.

Messi, winner of the FIFA Player of the Year award a record six times, has won every club and individual honour with Barcelona but he had lost all four of his previous finals with Argentina.

“In the end he did not throw in the towel and he succeeded,” Scaloni said.

No doubt Neymar would be Lionel Messi and Argentina’s biggest threat on Sunday when the South American giants clash in the Copa America 2021 final. Messi, who wants to win his first big title with Argentina, warned his teammates of Neymar ahead of the much-anticipated clash. Copa America 2021: In the final match of the Copa America Cup, there will be a competition for the title between two legendary teams Argentina and Brazil. Argentina entered the final after defeating Colombia 3–2 in a penalty shootout in the semi-finals. The hero of the match was Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who saved three penalties.

The score was tied 1–1 after regular time at the Mane Garrincha Stadium in Brasilia. Lautaro Martinez gave Argentina the lead in the seventh minute. But in the second half, Louis Diaz reduced the score to 1-1 in the 61st minute. Messi said after the match, “Emiliano is fantastic. We had faith in him. Argentina has not won any major tournament since winning the Copa America title in 1993. Argentina defeated Colombia 6–5 in a penalty shoot-out after a goalless match in the semi-finals in 1993.

Brazil has already made it to the final.

Brazil entered the final after beating Peru 1-0 on Monday. The Brazilian team has never lost a Copa America final at home and has won five out of six matches in the current tournament.

Martinez blocked shots from Sanchez, Yeri Mina, and Edwin Cardona in the shoot-out. Rodrigo de Paul failed to score for Argentina but, Messi, Leandro Paredez, and Lautaro Martínez scored to secure a victory for their team. Only Cuadrado and Miguel Borja were able to score for Colombia.

Martinez said after the match, “It was a matter of luck, luck was with me today. Brazil’s team is great, strong contenders. But we have a great coach, the best player in the world and we will try to win.”

Colombia’s team will take on Peru on Friday in the third-place play-off.

Rio de Janeiro: Protesters took to the streets in Brazil on Saturday (July 3) demanding the impeachment of President Jair Bolsonaro and more vaccines to fight the coronavirus pandemic, as the country faces the world`s second-deadliest outbreak after the United States. On Friday (July 2), Supreme Court Justice Rosa Weber authorized the opening of an investigation into Bolsonaro over alleged irregularities in the procurement of vaccines developed in India.

The protests were originally scheduled for July 24, but were brought forward after evidence of irregularities related to that vaccine deal were presented before a Senate committee investigating the federal government`s handling of the pandemic. Brazil`s COVID-19 crisis has been compounded by a slow vaccine rollout.

“It was not denialism, it was corruption,” said a banner held by 71-year-old Marilda Barroso in Rio de Janeiro. By 2 p.m. local time, protests had drawn thousands of people in at least 13 state capitals, according to local media reports. Demonstrations were scheduled to take place in 315 Brazilian cities and in 15 countries, local media reported citing the organizers of the acts.

More protests were scheduled to take place in the afternoon, including in Brazil`s biggest city of São Paulo.

Lucas Paqueta’s lone strike helped Brazil defeat Chile 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Copa America here at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday.

The only goal of the match came in the 46th minute as Paqueta netted the ball into the goalpost, giving Brazil 1-0 lead. No more goals were scored in the first half and as a result, Brazil went into halftime with a 1-0 cushion.

In the opening minutes of the second half, Brazil was given a big blow as Gabriel Jesus was sent off as he was given a red card by the match referee.

However, Brazil’s defence managed to hold off Chile and in the end, the hosts walked away with a 1-0 victory.

In the other quarterfinal, Peru defeated Paraguay 4-3 on penalties to enter the semifinals of the ongoing tournament.

The normal match action had finished in a 3-3 tie and as a result, the match eventually had to progress to penalties.

Later in the day, Uruguay will clash against Colombia in the quarterfinal while in the second quarterfinal of the day, Argentina will lock horns against Ecuador.

New Delhi: Brazil has decided to suspend the $324 million Covaxin contract to buy 20 million doses amid a probe into accusations of irregularities against President Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s health minister has announced.

The contract for the acquisition of the Covaxin vaccine was signed by the two sides in February.

While addressing a press conference, on Tuesday with Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga, the head of the Federal Comptroller General (CGU) Wagner Rosario, said that the agency will investigate the process of purchasing the vaccine.

“We suspended the deal as a simple preventive measure, since there are complaints that could not be explained well by the complainant, so we opened a preliminary investigation last week,” said Rosario, as quoted by CNN Brasil. 

New Delhi: Congressman Luis Miranda and his brother Luis Ricardo Miranda, who raised suspicions about Brazil’s vaccine deal with India’s Bharat Biotech, arrived at a Senate commission inquiry on Friday wearing a bullet-proof vest for safety.

They are key witnesses in the hearing over alleged wrongdoing in a vaccine contract signed by Brazil’s government to procure Covaxin doses in a deal costing1.6 billion reais (USD 323 million).

The parliamentary inquiry is looking into the allegations that the Brazilian government deliberately delayed securing Covid vaccines besides the probe on its handling of the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than half a million people in the country.

The coordinator of the Senate inquiry called for giving protection to Congressman Luis Miranda and his brother, along with the owners of Precisa Medicamentos company, the Brazillian intermediary for Bharat Biotech.

 The government is accused of ignoring vaccine offers from Pfizer Inc that was reportedly quoting a lower price and then struck a speedy agreement with Bharat Biotech, the probe has been launched by federal prosecutors and lawmakers to ascertain the reason behind this.

Congressman Luis Ricardo Miranda and his brother have stated that they met president Bolsonaro in March and warned him of the suspicious contract, but nothing was done to investigate the deal.

Reuters reports that Miranda, who is the head of imports at the ministry, told senators that he refused to approve an import license because an invoice for a first shipment asked for an up-front payment and was sent by a company not mentioned in the contract, Singapore-based Madison Biotech.

The report adds that Miranda told prosecutors he was pressured by Alex Lial Marinho, an aide to one of Bolsonaro’s closest allies, former Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello.

Miranda’s brother supported the account.

The controversy has put mounting pressure on President Jair Bolsonaro to explain the deal with Bharat Biotech.

Responding to the controversy, the far-right president maintained that there were no irregularities in the contract. “There is nothing wrong with the Covaxin contract, there is no overpricing,” Reuters reported him as saying at a news conference on Friday.

He alleged that his enemies were trying to stain his government with unfounded accusations of corruption. “I am incorruptible,” he declared.

The controversy over the Covaxin contract threatens to damage his image of having zero tolerance for corruption in his government.

Meanwhile, Bharat Biotech also issued a statement in that regard: “We strongly refute and deny any kind of allegation or implication of any wrongdoing whatsoever with respect to the supply of COVAXIN.” It stated that Madison Biotech is its global sales and marketing unit.

The Indian manufacturer further contended that its vaccine pricing had been consistently USD15-$20 per dose for foreign governments, a range in which the Brazil contract fell. 

Kolkata: A day after hitting at centre for decision to introduce Covaxin without authorisation from the World Health Organization (WHO), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to get the indigenous Covid vaccine approved to tackle the problems being faced by people trying to go abroad.

“It is learnt that Covaxin is still not approved by the WHO, creating problems for those trying to go abroad as many countries are allowing only those who are fully vaccinated with WHO-approved vaccines. Since the start of the vaccination programme, we have been receiving both Covishield and Covaxin. Even the private sector in the state has also procured both the vaccines,” the Chief Minister wrote.

“Large number of students from all over the country travel abroad every year for higher studies and many of these students have got themselves vaccinated with Covaxin. They came to learn later that their vaccination certificate is not valid abroad. These students are now in a fix regarding their next course of action and their career is at stake,” she added.

“I request for your kind intervention so that an early approval is received for Covaxin from the WHO so that the students do not face any problem. This will also benefit people travelling abroad for job, education, business and any other purposes,” she said.

On Wednesday, Mamata Banerjee had criticised the union government, calling it responsible for the uncontrolled spread of Covid during the second wave.

The West Bengal Chief Minister had said that the Centre should immediately get Covaxin authenticated by the WHO or else suggest a remedy for the recipients of this vaccine especially students as they are facing problems travelling abroad.

Terming the BJP as a “big disease for everyone”, Mamata Banerjee had said, “People took Covaxin on the suggestion of the Central government and now the latter should take the responsibility of the problems these people are facing. Students who are set to join foreign universities are in deep trouble as Covaxin is not authorised by the WHO yet. What should these students do now? They cannot take another vaccine as they have already taken Covaxin”.

“They did not take Covaxin on their own and now the Centre cannot shy away from its responsibility. Either the Centre should immediately get Covaxin authenticated by the WHO, or else suggest a remedy to this problem. It is for the Government of India to take some initiative. Even Bangladesh and Brazil are facing problems. The problem needs to be sorted out immediately,” she added.

The South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) on Monday confirmed that the upcoming edition of the Copa America will be played in Brazil.

“The CONMEBOL @CopaAmerica 2021 will be played in Brazil! Tournament start and end dates are confirmed. The venues and the fixture will be informed by CONMEBOL in the next few hours. The oldest national team tournament in the world will make the whole continent vibrate,” the official handle of CONMEBOL tweeted.

Earlier, CONMEBOL had confirmed that Copa America will not be played in Argentina in view of the current COVID-19 circumstances.

According to reports, Argentina had the fifth-worst coronavirus outbreak per capita across the globe with 76 daily cases per 1,00,000 people.

CONMEBOL had said the governing body is analysing offers from other countries that have shown interest to stage the tournament.

“CONMEBOL informs that, in view of the present circumstances, it decided to suspend the organisation of the Copa America in Argentina,” CONMEBOL tweeted.

“CONMEBOL analyzes the offer from other countries that have shown interest in hosting the continental tournament. News in this regard will be announced shortly. Updates will be announced soon,” it added.

Earlier this month, Colombia was ruled incapable of hosting the tournament amid civil unrest and increasing cases of coronavirus.

This was the first time since 1983 that Copa America was going to be held in two nations, Argentina and Colombia. The competition will have 10 teams participating with two groups of five teams each.

Copa America is the oldest football competition of national teams in the world. This will be the 47th edition of this prestigious competition organised by South America’s football ruling body CONMEBOL.

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will on Tuesday chair a meeting of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Ministers of Foreign Affairs/ International Relations via video conferencing during which the leaders will exchange views on the Covid-19 pandemic situation and countering terrorism besides other global and regional issues of concern.

 “India as the current BRICS Chair will convene the standalone meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs/ International Relations on 01 June, 2021,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in an official release earlier.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Carlos Alberto Franco França, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Grace Naledi Mandisa Pandor are expected to participate in the meeting.

Brasilia: Brazilians staged protests against President Jair Bolsonaro`s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in at least 16 cities across the country on Saturday, carrying signs such as “Out with Bolsonaro” and “Impeachment now.”

Bolsonaro`s popularity has plummeted during the coronavirus crisis, which has killed more than 460,000 Brazilians as the far-right leader played down its severity, dismissed mask-wearing and cast doubt on the importance of vaccines.

Organized by leftist political parties, unions and student associations, Saturday`s (May 29) protests in the capital Brasilia and in Rio de Janeiro were peaceful, but in the northeastern city of Recife, the police threw tear gas and shot rubber bullets.

In Sao Paulo, Brazil`s largest city, thousands of mask-wearing people blocked one of the largest city`s avenues. One large balloon depicted Bolsonaro as a vampire.

Some protests, like the one in Rio, included images of former leftist President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva wearing the presidential sash.

Earlier in May, Lula met centrist Fernando Henrique Cardoso, also a two-term former president, for lunch in a public show of their common purpose to block Bolsonaro from gaining a second term in next year`s presidential election.

Rio de Janeiro: Black Brazilians demonstrated in the country`s two largest cities on Thursday (May 13) to protest against racism and police violence toward their communities in a local version of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States, with some accusing the country`s president of genocide.

They were also protesting what they called the “false” anniversary of the abolition of slavery, officially marked for the day in 1888 when the Brazilian monarch`s daughter, Princess Isabel, signed the law freeing slaves.

Black Brazilians celebrate the end of slavery on Nov. 20, the anniversary of the killing of Zumbi, a figure of resistance against slavery and the last leader of a runaway slave community called Palmares.

Around 1,000 people marched through downtown Rio de Janeiro in the evening holding candles and signs saying, “Don`t kill me, kill racism,” and accusing far-right President Jair Bolsonaro of genocide through police violence.

Other signs decried the shooting deaths of 28 people in a slum called Jacarezinho on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro a week ago during an operation that police said targeted drug traffickers.

Human rights activists accused the police of “extrajudicial killings” saying many of the dead were not under investigation.

A Supreme Court justice said he saw signs of “arbitrary execution” in the raid on Jacarezinho.

In São Paulo, a similar number of demonstrators crowded onto the main avenue to oppose racism and police violence.

“We are marking the date of the false abolition of slavery, and the tragedy in Jacarezinho where police ambushed 28 people to kill them in cold blood,” said João de Oliveira.

“President Bolsonaro and his vice president even applauded the slaughter. He committed genocide. We are here to protest.”

With India emerging as the global hotspot, US President Joe Biden has said it has extended help “significantly” by sending material and machine parts, to help the country tackle the second wave of the pandemic.

As of now, six air shipments funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have been sent to India carrying health supplies, oxygen cylinders, N95 masks, and medicines.

“We are helping Brazil. We are helping India significantly. I spoke to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi. What he needs most is the material and the parts to be able to have his machines that can make the vaccine work. We’re sending him that,” Joe Biden told reporters at the White House on Tuesday.

On asked about the assistance offered to countries battling the crises, the President said, “We’re sending them oxygen. We are sending them a lot of the precursors. So we’re doing a lot for India.”

Earlier, the USAID at the behest of the Indian government had provided certain supplies to the Indian Red Cross, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki informed. “These are a lot of the components that the Indian government has expressed a vital need for. More flights are on the way, with total existence expected to exceed $100 million,” Jen Psaki said.

“In terms of oxygen support which is a big component of what they need right now, we are talking about oxygen cylinders, so the USAID delivered approximately 1,500 cylinders that will remain in India and can repeatedly be refilled at local supply centers with more planeloads to come,” she said.

So far, the USAID has delivered around 550 oxygen concentrators to obtain oxygen from ambient air besides large-scale units to support up to 20 patients each of an oxygen generation unit, she added.

The President said by July 4, around 10 percent of AstraZeneca vaccines will be sent to other countries by July 4 as per the PTI report.

It is important to note that the AstraZeneca vaccine has not been approved for use in the US even though the vaccine is administered globally.

“With regard to the AstraZeneca vaccine which we had, we have sent that vaccine to Canada and to Mexico and there are other countries that we’re talking to now. Matter of fact, I talked to a head of state today. I’m not prepared to announce who else we’ll be giving the vaccine to,” the US president said.

The press secretary told reporters that the Biden administration has directed its own order of AstraZeneca manufacturing supplies to India, allowing India to make over 20 million doses.
