Messi and Neymar picked as ‘Best Players’ of tournament

Messi and Neymar were picked as the two best players of the Copa America just before they met in the final. “It is not possible to choose only one (best) player because this tournament has two of them,” CONMEBOL said in a statement.

Messi dished up four goals and five assists in six matches while Neymar delivered two goals and three assists in five games.

CONMEBOL’s technical study group added that the players had a positive impact on their teams and were “the reflection of the South American DNA in every match they played” in the Copa.

The study group included Colombia’s Francisco Maturana and Carlos Restrepo; Uruguay’s Daniel Bañales and Gerardo Pelusso; Argentina’s Sergio Batista and Nery Pumpido and Brazil’s Oswaldo de Oliveira.

* Messi finished the tournament level with Colombia’s Luis Diaz for most goals with each player scoring four times.

* The Argentina captain scored against Chile to open the tournament before wrapping up the group stage with a brace against Bolivia.

England’s second-string side beat Pakistan by 52 runs in the second ODI at Lord’s on Saturday (July 10) to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing 248 for victory in a match reduced to 47 overs a side after rain delayed the start, Pakistan were bowled out for 195 in 41 overs after all five England bowlers picked up wickets.

Pakistan failed to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals, with their top four batsmen combining for only 35 runs. England’s Saqib Mahmood – who picked up four wickets in the first ODI – was the pick of the bowlers once again and he had Pakistan skipper Babar Azam trapped leg before and Mohammad Rizwan caught behind while Lewis Gregory finished with 3-44.

Saud Shakeel was the lone warrior for Pakistan offering resistance with his maiden ODI fifty (56) while fast bowler Hasan Ali also scored a quick-fire 31 – which included 22 runs in one over – before he holed out to Craig Overton in the deep.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bowl first as Ali took full advantage of the overcast conditions to claim his fourth five-for in ODIs (5/51) to earn a spot on the Lord’s ODI honours board.

England had a horror start when Dawid Malan and Zak Crawley, who hit fifties in the first ODI, were both dismissed for ducks but opener Phil Salt (60) and James Vince (56) steadied the ship with a flurry of boundaries in their 97-run partnership. Salt scored his maiden ODI half-century in 41 balls while Vince reached his fifty in 36 balls before they were bowled by Shakeel and Shadab Khan, respectively.

Ali dismissed captain Ben Stokes (22), John Simpson (17) and Overton – England’s third batsman out for a duck – in quick succession but Gregory (40) and Brydon Carse (31) frustrated the tourists with a 69-run stand to post a competitive total.

England won the first ODI by nine wickets. The third ODI will be played on Tuesday at Edgbaston.

Tokyo: For the first time ever, the number of women competing in individual shooting events at the upcoming Olympic Games will outnumber the total number of males competing.

Due to double starters, the number of total entries in single women’s events now exceeds the number of expected competitors in single men’s events for the first time, with 239 and 208, respectively.

Overall, India’s 15-member Olympic-bound shooting team is one of 356 competitors from over 100 countries fighting for gold in Tokyo, with the women’s 10m air rifle and 10m air pistol events attracting the most attention.

“356 athletes representing 100 NOC (National Olympic Committee) from five continents are entered to take part in the shooting sport competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) said in a statement.

The Olympics will be conducted in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8, with the shooting categories beginning the day after the opening ceremony and lasting for the first ten days of the event.

The 10m air pistol women’s and 10m air rifle women’s events are predicted to have the most participants, with 53 and 49, respectively.
The 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 places will have the most participants in the men’s events, with 47 and 39 respectively.

On May 11, India’s shooting team, which included some of the country’s most promising medal aspirations at the Tokyo Olympics, flew to Zagreb on a charter flight for their final preparations for the Games.
Considering the struggles the country was undergoing due to the second wave of coronavirus, it was decided to relocate the Indian shooters to Zagreb for their safety.

The Indian shooters competed at the European Championships in Osijek from May 29 to June 6, followed by the final World Cup before the Olympics, which was held at the same venue from June 22 to July 3.

LONDON: World number one Ash Barty became the first Australian woman to win the Wimbledon singles title for 41 years on Saturday when she defeated Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3 in the final.

The 25-year-old Barty, who won her maiden Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2019, emulated her idol Evonne Goolagong who claimed the second of her All England Club titles in 1980. “I hope I made Evonne proud,” Barty said on court after the trophy presentation. “This is incredible.”

Ten years after winning the girls` singles title at Wimbledon as a 15-year-old, Barty came into Saturday`s final having won five of the seven matches she had played against Pliskova. She breezed to a 4-0 lead against the former world number one with a double break.

Pliskova appeared all at sea against the Australian`s sharply dropping slices and precision hitting but managed a way to claw back into the contest by getting two service breaks back. But a third break of serve gave Barty the opening set.

The Australian maintained her control in the second set, breaking in the third game to open up a 3-1 lead but Pliskova found a higher gear to level things at 3-3.

With Barty serving for the match Pliskova, who suffered a break from 40-0 up, broke back immediately to force a tie-break and then rode her confidence to level the match at 1-1.

The Australian managed to regroup and jumped to a 3-0 lead in the decider with an early break, which proved enough. Barty converted her first match point when Pliskova committed a backhand unforced error, her 32nd of the match.

The Australian slumped to her knees and broke into tears, saying later she was unable to remember what happened on match point. “She brought out the best of me today,” Barty added.

“I was proud of myself that I could keep chipping away at the start of the third set. It took me a while to say I wanted to win this tournament, but it`s better than I ever imagined.

“I didn`t sleep last night … but I felt at home out on the court.”

The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar has conquered the cricket world and fans always get excited to see the cricket legend being involved in other activities after retirement. This time the cricket icon has shown off his cooking skills in a Facebook video turning into a Master Chef this time.

Tendulkar posted a video on his Facebook account while cooking an unnamed dish using cricketing terminologies and even put his wristwork to test. The cricketer shared a video of himself whipping up a dish. He shared the video with the caption stating, ‘Say Hi to your chef for today! Guess what’s cooking?

In the video, ‘Chef’ Sachin Tendulkar can be seen cooking with full enthusiasm and hilariously saying ‘It’s a surprise for everyone, nobody knows what I am cooking, neither do I’. Sachin then flips the Omelette which at times can be tricky for beginners and jokingly says ‘See this is what I have mastered’. 

“Now, the batsman is set, so the bowlers have to save their lives so they are going to get bashed around. I’ve mastered this art, and figured out what to do. It takes a bit of time but we are there,” he added.

Even though Tendulkar did not know what he was preparing, he was more than happy with the end result.

While many fans have guessed he was cooking breakfast for somebody but the master blaster did not reveal who was shooting the video when he donned the Chef hat.

Fans were happy to see their favourite cricketer as they flooded the comments section with their remarks.

India cricketer Harbhajan Singh and wife Geeta Basra have become parents for the second time as the couple has been blessed with a baby boy. The veteran off-spinner announced the arrival of their second child on social media on Saturday (July 10). The loved couple already has a daughter named Hinaya Heer Plaha. She was born in 2016.

Taking to Twitter, Harbhajan wrote, “Blessed with a baby boy #grateful #babyboy. shukar aa Tera maalka.”

Harbhajan also shared an emotional statement that read: “A new little hand for us to hold, his love is grand, precious as gold. A wonderful gift, so special and sweet. Our hearts are full, our lives complete. We thank the Almighty for blessing us with a healthy baby boy. Both Geeta and the baby are doing well. We are overwhelmed with joy and would like to extend our gratitude to our well-wishers, for their constant love and support.”

Harbhajan married actress Geeta Basra on October 29, 2015, at his native place in Jalandhar, Punjab.

Harbhajan currently plays for two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders after he was released by Chennai Super Kings ahead of last year’s auction. He last played for India in 2016. The schedule of the India and Sri Lanka series has been changed again due to Coronavirus. According to the information revealed by sources, now the ODI series between the two countries will start from July 18. Earlier on Friday, reports suggested that the series was likely to begin from July 17. But now for the second time, the schedule of the series has been changed. 

The three-match ODI series is likley to start by July 18. The match dates are to be 18, 20, 22.

The three-match ODI series between India and Sri Lanka was to begin on July 13. But after two members of the Sri Lankan cricket team tested positive for Covid the series was said to be postponed. The two members had tested positive for the Delta variant of the virus. Both of them have been moved to intermediate care units, while the Sri Lankan team has now been forced to isolate for two more days. They were originally supposed to enter the bio-bubble on Friday but now they will have to undergo a fresh set of RT-PCR tests and those results will determine whether Sri Lanka can field the players who are currently in isolation.

According to the latest inputs, a fresh positive case has been reported in the second bio bubble of the Sri Lanka squad. As there are two bio bubbles of Lankan players and both of them have reported positive cases, now selectors have been asked for a third bubble with a new set of players.

The rescheduled ODI series between India and Sri Lanka will kick off on July 18, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has confirmed.

The upcoming ODI series between India and Sri Lanka has been rescheduled after hosts’ team analyst GT Niroshan and batting coach Grant Flower tested positive for coronavirus.

“The India-Sri Lanka ODI series will start on July 18 due to coronavirus cases in Sri Lanka camp,” Jay Shah told ANI.

The Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian side was slated to lock horns in the ODI series scheduled to begin on Tuesday, but due to the recent cases in the Sri Lanka camp, the tour will now start from July 18.

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, both Niroshan and Flower have been infected with the Delta variant, which is more contagious. Sri Lanka squad was slated to come out of quarantine and enter a bio-bubble on Friday, but the players have been forced to spend at least two more days in isolation.
